  1. Great Post Traveling for 37 days to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia come June. I still need to poke around more at your awesome blog but if you could mention anything about getting sick from mosquitoes that is actually my biggest concern about traveling (not that it keeps me from going) but I guess the lack of control in that situation always has me on edge before I actually get there. Thanks!

    1. Hey Kelly!

Well the good news is neither myself or my boyfriend got sick from any mosquito bites. In fact, I think I had the sniffles twice in 8 months and only a couple of instances of an upset stomach, but nothing major! We didn’t take any anti-malaria meds as I was actually more concerned about the medication’s impact on our liver (it’ really rough on the organs). We used mosquito repellent and slept under mosquito nets where provided. You will be traveling during the more rainy season, so there will likely be more mosquitos to contend with then when we traveled from Sept-Feb, but I wouldn’t let it bother you too much. Mosquito bites are inevitable, but the chances of you catching anything from them are slim, as long as you’re not jungle trekking it through uncharted jungles πŸ™‚ Oh, and Tiger Balm was excellent to use on the bites we did get.

Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions or concerns.

      Cheers!
      A.

  3. Hey Arienne,
Awesome blog! i came across it when looking for inspiration for my upcoming New Zealand road trip πŸ™‚ however, i only have a week for the South Island. any tips? what were your favorite places?

    1. Hey JJ!

I’m so happy you like the blog! New Zealand is one of my favourite countries. The people are awesome and the South Island is gorgeous! I’m sure you’ve already read the two posts I’ve written on the South Island: http://seeyousoon.ca/road-tripping-new-zealand-two-week-itinerary-of-the-south-island-part-1/ but since you only have a week, focus on one half of the island. I’d recommend the southern half where you can hit up Mt Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound and either Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. In terms of tips, when are you going? I may just have a post up for you in time πŸ™‚

      1. i’m gonna be in the south island mid january, so i hear a good time for it too. even though id love to visit some of the northern parts, such as the tasman abel national park, i think indeed it would also be wise to do just 1/2 the island for a week. so maybe the south πŸ™‚ thanks!

  4. Hi Arienne, so happy to have found this. Travelling Hong Kong to Hanoi the same as you and panicking about Visas. I am going to visit the consulate in HK to get my Vietnamese visa but I was just wondering about my visa for china? do I need one if im travelling via train etc? Im so very confused and need a little help.
Going HK – GZ then GZ – Nan then Nan – Hanoi the same as you
    Thank you πŸ™‚
    Jessica

    1. Hey Jessica! So happy you found me πŸ™‚ Yes, you’ll definitely need to get your Vietnamese visa ahead of time. In terms of your visa for China, you’ll need another entry when traveling from Hong Kong to Vietnam since you’ll be traveling through China again. We ended up getting a double entry visa. Do you know how many entries your Chinese visa gives you?

  5. Hey Arienne, i really enjoyed reading your blog. If you go to Viet Nam and visit Hoi an ancient town, can you please visit our restaurant? I hope to have opportunity to serve you and get a feedback of restaurant from you. Thank you. πŸ™‚
